Asia-Pacific Skule Alumni Community Grows Stronger

Earlier this spring, the Faculty hosted alumni receptions in six cities across Asia-Pacific, strengthening the Skule community, building support for the planned Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and providing news from campus.

Albert Li (MechE 8T2; MBA 8T8) and Teresa Li (BSCP 8T3) hosted 50 alumni from a variety of divisions at Bombardier Aerospace China’s headquarters in Shanghai, where Albert also spoke about his distinguished career in the automotive industry, his recent move to Bombardier and the company’s exciting expansion plans.

In Taipei, a group of Skule alumni enjoyed dinner together as they discussed plans to build a Taiwanese Skule network, noting that alumni from Taiwan are increasingly living and working across Asia and North America.

Senior Canadian Trade Commissioner Tracy Reynolds hosted 20 Skule guests at his official residence in Jakarta, where alumni from around Indonesia gathered to hear news of the planned Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

In Kuala Lumpur, Canadian Acting High Commissioner Douglas Bingeman kindly opened his official residence to a large group of alumni, parents, prospective students and local high-school representatives to hear Engineering Dean Cristina Amon talk about recent developments back on campus, including the successful launch of the Engineering Business minor. While in Kuala Lumpur, Dean Amon also met with government and industry officials for discussions about maintaining a robust flow of Malaysian students to Skule.

Skule alumni, parents and prospective students in Singapore gathered on the rooftop garden of the Singapore Straits Building, provided courtesy of brothers Robert Chen (MechE 7T4) and Tony Chen (CivE 7T5) to network, learn from each other and enjoy the stunning views. Singapore’s new Ambassador to Greece KOH Yong Guan (MechE 7T0,MASc 7T2) and C.K. Chang (MechE MASc 6T8) both made brief remarks about their time at Skule and the importance of the engineering profession to the world. Alumni in Singapore and Malaysia are working together to raise support for a student design room in the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which will be named the Singapore & Malaysia Alumni Room.

Dean Amon hosted Skule alumni, parents and prospective students at a reception in Hong Kong – home to the Faculty’s largest population of alumni outside of Canada – where members of the class of 8T6 had a particularly strong showing. While in Hong Kong, Dean Amon visited the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, where she and HKUST Engineering Dean Khaled Ben Letaief signed an MOU to strengthen research and educational collaboration between the two institutions.
