George Craig’s career combines notable research accomplishments in metallurgy with outstanding contributions to the University and to the professional community.

Following service as an RCAF flight lieutenant (1940-1946) in the Aleutians, Labrador, India and Burma, he was in the first contingent of World War II veterans to enroll in the Faculty’s Ajax Division. He immediately went on, after graduation, to pursue his interests in metallurgy, notably in the field of failure analysis (M.A.Sc., 1950; Ph.D., 1952)

Between 1952 and 1956, George Craig worked as Senior Scientist (Mines, Ottawa), in charge of ferrous metallurgy, and with consulting to the armed forces and Canadian industry.

In 1956, he came back to the University, by 1964 was a Professor in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science. His teaching and research involved the structure and properties of metals, with significant activities abroad (Baikov Institute, Moscow, 1969; Imperial College, London, 1979). He retired in 1984, as Professor Emeritus.
