As a student, Bill Daniel was President of the Engineering Society, won a senior football “T” and was winner of the 3T5 Second Mile Award.  He began his professional career as a petroleum engineer with Shell Oil Company, working in the USA, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Trinidad and Canada. He assumed increasing technical and managerial responsibilities, and in 1974, he became President and Chief Executive Officer of Shell Canada.

His business activities have included Directorships with the Bank of Montreal, Bechtel Canada Engineers Ltd., Bell Canada, Montreal Life Assurance Company of Canada and Chairman and Director of the Conference Board of Canada.

A man with a strong social conscience, he has participated in a broad range of community and “Second Mile” projects. His public acknowledgments include Canadian Council of Christians and Jews Human Relations Award (1974), APEO Citizenship Award (1975) and the Engineering Alumni Medal (1976).

He received the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, from the University of Toronto (1980) and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (1982).
