After graduation, James Ham served with the RCNVR 1944-45. He went to MIT on a fellowship (SM 1947 and ScD 1952). Returning to U of T, he progressed through professorial ranks to Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, then Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (1966-73), to Chairman of Research Board (1974-76), to President of the University of Toronto (1978-83).
Ham’s activities in Engineering and education have been acknowledged by Honourary Doctorates from University of Montreal (1973), Queen’s University (1974), University of New Brunswick and McGill University (1979), McMaster University and Technical University of Nova Scotia (1980), and Memorial University of Newfoundland (1981). He received Doctor of Laws from University of Manitoba and Hanyang University, Seoul Korea (1981).
His professional and public activities include Chairmanships of Deans of Engineering Committee (1967-68), Committee on Education and training of World Federation of Engineering Organizations (1971-74), Committee on NRC Laboratories (1972-74), and Royal Commission (Ontario) on Health and Safety of Workers in Mines.
As Engineer, researcher, author of many papers, traveling scientist, and a member of numerous committees, he has served his nation well in Engineering, in “Second Mile” projects and in education at every level.
