Elizabeth “Elsie” Gregory MacGill (1905-1980) garnered a succession of female firsts during her illustrious career: Electrical Engineering at U of T, Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Michigan and first woman member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.
After overcoming a serious illness, she entered the Canadian aircraft industry and contributed greatly to Canada’s World War II aircraft production.
Her accomplishments in and for the engineering profession brought her an impressive array of honours and awards. Reflecting her sense of obligation to serve her community, she was concerned for the rights and status of women and was active in women’s organizations across Canada.
She was the recipient of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario Gold Medal and the Order of Canada.
Achievements
- In charge of design and airworthiness of the Chipmunk Trainer
- Responsible for all engineering for Canadian wartime production of the Hawker Hurricane fighter
- Author of “My Mother the Judge”
