James MacLaren served with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps during World War II. Graduating in Civil Engineering after the war, he continued his education, receiving his MSc at MIT in Sanitary Engineering. He joined James F. MacLaren Associates in 1950, and in 1962 was appointed President of the successor firm James F. MacLaren Ltd. He has been involved in all phases of water supply and distribution, sewerage and sewage disposal and drainage and flood control. His responsibilities have included the construction of major waterworks and sewage plants throughout Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia and the Maritimes and major involvement in a number of international projects.

MacLaren’s activities have been recognized through election as Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering, Queen’s Jubilee Medal and as President of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada.
