James Lewis Morris worked for over 40 years in his Engineering survey practice in Pembroke, Ontario. He also spent 20 years on staff at the University of Toronto as an Examiner for professional degrees.

Morris was the only member of the first class of the School of Practical Science in 1881, after which he served in inspection, surveys and Engineering for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests for 14 years.

His public service includes holding several offices in municipal bodies, and serving as Mayor of Pembroke. His other interests included being a prolific writer and widely-noted historian.
