Harry William Tate (1884-1974) played an important part in every major development of the Toronto Transit Commission from 1920 to 1954 culminating in the successful completion of Canada’s first subway, the Yonge Street line.

During two world wars, he served his country well. IN World War I, he was overseas with the Canadian Engineers, and in the Second World War, he was active in the University of Toronto C.O.T.C., selecting and training engineering officers for the Canadian Forces; in recognition for which he received the M.B.E.

He represented engineering graduates on the University of Toronto Senate for several terms, and was an Honourable life Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
