James Roy Cockburn known as “J. Roy” to hundreds of graduates, joined the teaching staff of the School of Practical Science in 1904 after spending a few years gaining experience with the ship building industry in the United States.
He devoted the remainder of his career to teaching descriptive geometry and Engineering drawing, during which time he was Head of the Department of Engineering Drawing.
His military service overseas in World War II included France and the Middle East, where he is credited with improving the sound ranging technique of the Royal Engineers. He received the Military Cross for services in Palestine. From 1931 – 1935, he commanded the COTC at the University of Toronto.
