For two years after graduation, Edward was Assistant Chief Chemist with Aluminium Co. of Canada. He later joined Steel Co. of Canada where he worked for 28 years until his retirement as Chief Combustion Engineer, specializing in research, design and application related to fuel systems, combustion and heat treatment. He was granted Toronto’s professional degree of chemical engineering in 1932.
World recognition followed from his oxygen-jet concept in steelmaking (“the greatest single step forward since the introduction of the blast furnace”) for which he received the Engineering Institute of Canada’s Plummer Medal (1948). His inventiveness was extraordinary: divergent jet burner, v-ported butterfly valve, floor-wax applicator and railway level-crossing signal.
In addition to his contributions to professional and scientific bodies, he served church and community, particularly in providing assistance to the handicapped. In 1977, he was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal.
