Skule Lunch & Learn series
Engineering healthier and sustainable indoor environments
Professor Sarah Haines explores the indoor microbiome—the bacteria, fungi and viruses that influence our health inside buildings. Her research looks at how building materials, mold and air filtration tools affect air quality and support viral detection. With a focus on northern First Nations housing, her work informs healthier indoor environments and pandemic readiness in vulnerable communities.
Professor Yu Zou investigates metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) to design complex, high-performance parts with minimal waste. His research explores the material science, design and real-world applications of this technology in sectors like aerospace, biomedical engineering and energy.
Dr. Pratish Gawand (ChemE PhD 1T4), CEO and co-founder of Ardra Inc., explores precision fermentation—an emerging biotech that uses engineered microbes to sustainably produce food ingredients like proteins and fats. His work tackles the environmental and commercial challenges of scaling this technology.
Professor Steven Waslander develops autonomous vehicle systems that perform reliably in challenging weather. His research combines sensor technology and self-aware neural networks to improve real-time perception, safety and adaptability on the road.
