What if you could take carbon dioxide and turn it into fuels and feedstocks using only solar energy and water? What if you could recycle the emissions from power plants? These are the questions we are trying to address here at the University of Toronto, and we are getting close to a viable answer.
This talk will cover an overview of solar fuels, the market promise of solar fuels and the Carbon XPrize — a $20-million competition for the team that can capture and convert the most CO².
Join us for lunch to hear Phil De Luna (MSE PhD Candidate) speak about the fundamentals of transmission-line metamaterials and related structures such as the Huygens’ metasurface.

Phil De Luna (MSE PhD Candidate) is currently a PhD candidate under the tutelage of Professor Ted Sargent (ECE) at the University of Toronto where he studies materials design of carbon dioxide reduction for solar fuels production. De Luna is an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholar, a Massey College Junior Fellow, a Mission Innovation consultant for the National Research Council, and a CIFAR Bio-Inspired Solar Energy Graduate Fellow.
He earned his BASc from the University of Windsor before earning his MASc at the University of Ottawa. De Luna has been a visiting researcher at Stanford, UC Berkeley, the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the Canadian Light Source, and the IBM TJ Watson Research Center. He has published in many high-impact journals such as Nature, Science, Nano Letters, Science Advances, and ACS Catalysis to name a few. De Luna, along with his team at the Sargent lab, are semi-finalists in the Carbon XPrize.
